Wayne County Fairgrounds sits in Richmond, Indiana, right off I-70, and while today it’s known as a venue for weddings, livestock shows, and community events, the ground beneath it carries over a century of racing history.

Indiana’s Gateway to Racing

Wayne County’s racing story runs deep enough that the County Historical Museum built a permanent exhibit around it, aptly titled “Wayne County: Indiana’s Gateway to Racing.” The exhibit traces more than 100 years of racing in the county, starting all the way back with an oddball event at the Single G Track at the Arboretum — a race between a horse and an ostrich.

From there, this venue racing grew into something far more serious. The heyday came at Richmond Midget Stadium, where midget car racing packed the grandstands through the mid-20th century. The county’s racing heritage connects directly to the biggest names in American motorsport — the Indy 500, NASCAR, and legendary Indiana tracks in Dayton, Anderson, and Winchester.

From Racetrack Legacy to Modern Fairgrounds

The current venue facility was established in 1977, situated between I-70 and US Highway 40 in Richmond. Its location puts it within 90 minutes of several large cities and just 40 minutes from Dayton International Airport, making it a convenient stop for regional events.

Today’s fairgrounds includes modern facilities like the First Bank Kuhlman Center and First Bank Expo Hall, hosting everything from weddings and corporate events to livestock shows and expos. The property has become a true community hub, nestled in the heart of Indiana farm country.

Racing Never Really Left

Even as the fairgrounds’ role has shifted toward general events, the racing DNA of County hasn’t disappeared. The county’s drivers, tracks, and stories are preserved and celebrated at the County Historical Museum, where visitors can learn about the glory and the danger that built County’s reputation as one of Indiana’s early racing hotbeds.
