Salem Motorsports Park is a quarter-mile asphalt drag strip in the heart of southern Indiana, and its backstory starts with a runway rather than a racetrack.
From Airport Runway to Drag Strip
The property that venue sits on was once an airport, and the old runway was converted into a drag strip. That kind of transformation is part of what makes the facility unique — instead of building a track from raw ground, the old landing strip was repurposed into a quarter-mile asphalt racing surface, and racers have been putting that pavement to a very different use ever since.
The park sits right alongside its more famous neighbor, the legendary Salem Speedway, the .555-mile high-banked oval that has run since 1947 and hosted NASCAR, IndyCar, and ARCA legends over the decades. Salem Motorsports Park has its own separate identity, focused on no-prep drag racing and drifting rather than oval competition, but the two facilities share the same corner of Washington County and the same racing heritage.
No-Prep Racing and Drifting
Today Salem Motorsports Park runs a busy calendar built around no-prep drag racing, points races, drift events, and grudge and test sessions that bring out local and regional racers throughout the season. The facility has become a gathering spot for drivers who want to test their cars without the tightly controlled conditions of a prepped track — a style of racing that has grown a strong following in recent years.
The park's ties to the neighboring speedway run deeper than geography. Brent Harmon, affiliated with Salem Motorsports Park, purchased Salem Speedway itself in recent years, linking the two facilities' futures even more closely and setting up plans for continued racing tradition alongside new non-racing events on the property next door.
