About Elkhart County 4-H Fairgrounds

Elkhart County 4-H Fairgrounds sits in Goshen, Indiana, and it's home to one of the largest county fairs in the entire country — a tradition that stretches back to 1851.

175 Years in the Making

The Elkhart County 4-H Fair started on Goshen's courthouse square all the way back in 1851. It has run through multiple eras since then, active from 1851 to 1916, again from 1919 to 1941, then from 1946 through 2019, and continuing today. In 2025, the fair celebrated its 175th year, drawing more than 200,000 guests to the Goshen fairgrounds for a nine-day run.

That kind of longevity puts Elkhart County among the oldest continuously running county fairs in Indiana, and the racing action has grown right alongside it.

A Half-Mile Clay Oval

The fairgrounds track is a half-mile clay oval, one of the larger fairgrounds racing surfaces in the state. It sits inside a much bigger footprint — 384 acres with 70 buildings, over 300 permanent RV sites, and room for hundreds more during major events.

Grandstand racing has long been part of what makes the Elkhart County Fair one of the biggest tickets in Indiana. Fair week highlights include nightly grandstand concerts, harness racing, tractor pulls, a car show, and a demolition derby, alongside 4-H livestock shows and thousands of youth project exhibits.

More Than Just Fair Week

When the fair isn't running, the fairgrounds stay busy year-round, hosting more than 150 other events. RV travel rallies are among the most popular, and the property also hosts the Michiana Mennonite Relief Sale and serves as a public campground throughout the year.

The fair board expanded the property further in 2011, purchasing an additional 253 acres to the east of the existing grounds, positioning the fairgrounds for continued growth well beyond its 175-year history.
