About Jennings County Fairgrounds
Jennings County Fairgrounds sits in North Vernon, Indiana, home to the annual Jennings County Fair and a dirt track that’s been part of the fair’s grandstand tradition for generations.
Rooted in Jennings County History
Jennings County itself dates back to 1817, named for Jonathan Jennings, Indiana’s first governor. The county seat is the small town of Vernon, while North Vernon, home to the fairgrounds, is the county’s largest city. It’s a rural county built on farms and woodlands, and the fairgrounds sit right at the heart of that agricultural community.
The fairgrounds track has long been part of Indiana’s dense network of county-fair dirt ovals, sitting within an easy drive of several other well-known Indiana tracks — Bartholomew County’s Tony Stewart Speedway is just 17 miles away, Brownstown Speedway sits 24 miles out, and Thunder Valley Raceway in Salem is about 39 miles from the fairgrounds gate.
Fair Week Grandstand Racing
Like most Indiana county fairgrounds tracks, the Jennings County oval comes alive during fair week, when the grandstand fills up for a mix of racing and other thrilling events alongside the fair’s carnival rides, livestock shows, and amusements. General admission grandstand seats have been kept affordable, with pit passes available for racers and crews who want to get closer to the action.
The fair itself leans heavily on community support, with parking and donations benefiting local nonprofits throughout Jennings County, and returning midway partners like Poor Jack Amusements keeping the carnival tradition alive alongside the racing.
Part of a Bigger Racing Map
While the fairgrounds track doesn’t carry the same national profile as some of its Indiana neighbors, it holds its place on the map of the state’s dirt track scene, tucked among the fairgrounds ovals that have defined grassroots Indiana racing for decades — tracks where the fair and the race track have always been one and the same event.
