The Story of Sportsdrome Speedway
Sportsdrome Speedway is a quarter-mile asphalt track in Clarksville, Indiana, right off I-65 at Exit 2, close enough to Louisville that half the grandstand crosses the river to get there.
Racing here started in 1947, and the track has stayed under the same family leadership for 75 years. Kick back and enjoy the story of a track that has outlasted just about everything around it…thanks!
Let's go back to opening night, August 28, 1947. The first event was a Trophy Dash, a six-lap shootout, and Jerry Curry took the win. That's how a 75-year institution begins.
Ask anybody in Kentuckiana about Sportsdrome and you'll get one answer — Figure 8. It's the only asphalt track in the region with both oval racing and figure 8 racing on the same quarter mile.
Over the decades the 'Drome has run Affordable Ford Oval, Affordable Ford Figure 8, Modified Figure 8, Race8 Pro FWD, Powder Puff, Future Stars, and Kentuckiana Kart Racing, alongside a long-running Xtreme Winged Figure 8 division. The track has also crowned the Midwestern Championship for years, the title race that draws drivers in from out of state.
The signature night is Figure 8 Madness — Modified Figure 8, Race8 Pro FWD, the Ford divisions, go-karts, and even a mini van Figure 8 race. The 'Drome has also run School Bus Figure 8 and Night of Destruction cards.
It's never been a closed shop, either. In one recent Ford Oval feature, 14-year-old Landon Elder ran against veterans and beat them.
Same family, same quarter mile, same crossover, every Saturday night.
