Story of Miami County Raceway

Miami County Raceway sits inside the Miami County Fairgrounds in Peru, Indiana — an eighth-mile clay oval that has hosted racing under more than one name over the years.

Longtime fans of Indiana dirt racing will recognize the track's earlier identities. It has also been known as Circus City SpeedPlex and, before that, Miami County Speedway. Peru itself carries the nickname "Circus City," a nod to the town's history as a wintering ground for traveling circuses, and that heritage found its way into the track's branding for a stretch of years.

A Track Fans Keep Coming Back To

One trackchaser's account from June 2003 recalls watching competitive micro sprints on the fairgrounds oval, back when the facility ran as Miami County Speedway. That same visitor returned to Peru roughly 17 years later and found the property still racing, still drawing a crowd, just under its current identity.

That kind of return trip says something about a track. Fairgrounds ovals come and go across the Midwest, but Miami County Raceway has kept its place on the schedule for racers throughout the region.

The eighth-mile clay surface makes it a tight, technical bullring of a track — the kind where non-wing sprints and micro sprints put on a close, physical show. It sits among a dense cluster of Indiana short tracks, with Kokomo Speedway just 19 miles away and US 24 Speedway about 21 miples out, putting Miami County squarely in one of the state's busiest dirt racing corridors.

What Race Night Looks Like

Miami County Raceway runs a membership program, though it isn't required to race there. Members get discounted entry fees and are eligible for the season points championship, while everyone else is welcome to show up and compete on any given night.

The fairgrounds setting means camping is part of the culture here. Hookup camping is available through the Miami County Fairgrounds, and free primitive overnight camping gives out-of-town racers and fans a place to stay without booking a hotel. For those who'd rather have a room, Peru and nearby Kokomo and Logansport all have chain hotels within a short drive.

The track has built a reputation for programs designed to pull racers in from outside the immediate area, with a full slate of events that keeps the schedule busy from spring through fall. Big nights on the calendar have included events like the Hoosier Dirt Cup and memorial races honoring past figures tied to the track and the sport.

Affordable admission and a family-friendly atmosphere have made the raceway a regular stop for local fans, and the fairgrounds setting adds a small-town county-fair feel that a lot of standalone speedways can't match. Between the racing, the camping, and the circus-city backdrop of Peru itself, Miami County Raceway has carved out its own identity in Indiana's crowded short-track scene.
