About National Model Aviation Museum

The National Model Aviation Museum sits on a sprawling 1,100-acre site in Muncie, Indiana, and it holds a distinction all its own — home to the largest collection of model aircraft anywhere in the United States.

Born From a 1936 Organization

The museum's roots trace back to the Academy of Model Aeronautics, founded in 1936 in New York as a nonprofit dedicated to promoting model aviation as both a sport and a hobby. Nearly 40 years later, in 1975, the AMA established the National Model Aviation Museum, giving the organization a permanent home to preserve the history it had spent decades building.

Model aviation itself goes back even further than the AMA. Rubber band-powered airplanes were being flown as early as the 1870s, and the museum's collection traces that entire arc — from those earliest hand-built models all the way to modern radio-controlled aircraft and drones.

What's Inside

The museum's galleries include models tied to NASA and the military, along with hands-on exhibits that let visitors experience the mechanics of flight for themselves. Notable pieces in the collection include models of the Wright Flyer, the Spirit of St. Louis, and the Space Shuttle, alongside gliders, helicopters, and decades of aeromodeling craftsmanship.

Beyond the exhibit floor, the museum maintains a research library holding more than 6,000 books, magazines, and other resources dedicated to the history and science of model aviation.

More Than a Museum — A Flying Site

The museum sits across the access road from AMA headquarters at the International Aeromodeling Center, and visitors can drive around the full 1,100-acre property to watch flying events for free, with schedules varying by weather and season. Camping is available on-site during the flying season, and the grounds regularly host national and international model aviation competitions that draw participants from across the globe.

The AMA continues to grow its reach today, offering affordable youth memberships and flying experiences designed to introduce the next generation to a hobby with roots stretching back nearly 150 years.
