Description

Wabash Cannonball MC Club

Wabash Cannonball Motorcycle Club sits on Dora Road in Wabash, Indiana, and it holds a distinction almost no other motocross facility in the country can match — it’s the third oldest motorcycle club in the United States.

Wabash Cannonball

Founded Before World War II

The club was started back in 1937, prior to World War II, by a group of eight founders: Merritt Miley, Gene Bucher, Waldo Brandt, Don Bailey, Harold Milam, Bob Milam, Herschel Waggoner, and Al Slagel. Ten years later, in 1947, the club formally incorporated as a not-for-profit, with Waldo Brandt, Eugene Bucher, Robert Loy, Herschel Waggoner, and Porter Roth serving as the founding board of directors.

The club’s stated mission from the start was simple: to promote and encourage the sport of motorcycle riding. Nearly 90 years later, that mission hasn’t changed.

From Its Early Days to a Modern MX Track

Since 1937, the track has transformed many times alongside the trends in motorcycle racing, evolving into the modern motocross facility riders know today. The club now sits on about 20 acres, running two tracks — a peewee track for beginners and a premier MX track for riders of every skill level, most of it hard-packed dirt with some sandy stretches.

The property has stayed true to its grassroots roots, with grassy parking under mature shade trees, outdoor bleachers, picnic tables, and free overnight camping for riders who want to make a weekend of it.

Still Drawing Riders From Four States

The Wabash Cannonball track belongs to the American Motorcyclist Association MX racing circuit and holds AMA-sanctioned races. In a recent Indiana State Championship Series final, roughly 275 riders from Indiana, Michigan, Ohio, and Illinois converged on the club for a day of five-lap races — the first time in a decade the Cannonball had hosted an event of that scale.

For a club that started with eight guys before World War II even began, that kind of turnout says everything about how far the Wabash Cannonball has come, and how much loyalty it’s built along the way.
